A Gentler Approach to Content Planning, through a neuro-inclusive lens
Let’s be honest: content planning can feel like a lot.
For many of us – especially if you’re neurodivergent, juggling life admin, or simply navigating a season of chaos – traditional content calendars just don’t work. The idea of batching 30 days of Instagram posts, or colour-coding a spreadsheet full of themes, can feel less like clarity and more like shutdown. (Full disclosure - I love a spreadsheet...but then again I can hate them at times too. For me, how and when I create content or plan it will differ and change with my energy...so, that's what led me to this blog).
This post is a soft invitation into a different way – one that honours your energy, your cycles, and your way of thinking.

Why Content Planning Feels So Hard Sometimes
Content creation isn’t always a straight line - for any of us. But for neurodivergent minds in particular, it can feel especially non-linear. Ideas might arrive in flurries - or not at all. Focus comes and goes. And the “shoulds” can stack up fast.
I should be more consistent
I should have a strategy
I should be more visible
Planning can feel like pressure. And pressure often leads to avoidance, perfectionism, or a total freeze. That’s not a failure – it’s a sign the system wasn’t built for you.
Traditional Calendars Don’t Fit Every Brain
Most content planning frameworks assume:
Consistent executive function
Predictable energy
Linear thinking
A preference for structure over spontaneity
If you thrive on intuitive thinking, energy bursts or emotional alignment, those tools probably feel more like a chore than a support.
A Gentler Way to Plan Content
Planning can be flexible, non-linear, and even regulating. It can create possibility, not pressure.
Some of my favourite neuro-inclusive approaches include:
Idea Banks
Capture ideas when they come - voice notes, sticky notes, digital boards, phone notes, half-sent drafts. These are not wasted thoughts; they’re creative assets. Return to them when your brain is ready.
Mood-led Content Days
Feeling reflective? Write something deeper. Feeling playful? Record a Reel or post a meme. Let your mood guide your medium.
Visual Boards
Build visual boards (whiteboards, pinboards) where you map out the themes that matter - stories and perspectives you actually care about sharing.
Repeat What Resonates
If something landed - reuse it. If something felt good - repeat it. Your audience often needs to hear your key message multiple times before it sticks.
Gentle Routines
Try a soft rhythm: maybe “Mondays = create, Fridays = share,” or “two posts a week max.” Flexibility helps protect energy - and if you skip a week? You’re still valid.
But (there is always a 'but')...Strategy Still Matters
Gentle doesn’t mean passive. You can take a thoughtful, strategic approach - even without chasing algorithms or burning out.
Here are some tips to help your content work for you:
Be real, but intentional
Authenticity is what builds trust — but pairing it with purpose is what gets results.
Know your audience
Speak in their language. Anticipate their needs. Offer value they recognise.
Use keywords wisely
Instagram (currently) scans your captions, voiceovers, alt text, and hashtags to understand what your content is about. Use words that reflect your themes, offers, values - naturally woven in, not stuffed.
Focus on connection over volume
You don’t need to post daily. For many small brands, 2–3 thoughtful posts a week is a sweet spot - especially if they’re rooted in your key messages and tone of voice.
Prioritise creativity
The algorithm may change, but humans still scroll for inspiration, beauty, emotion, and truth. Creative, engaging content will always have power - even in small doses.
